Sarah Jessica Parker said that she liked this dress because it reminded her of New York City's architecture. Being somewhat of an architecture dork, that comment endeared me more to this dress than I would have felt inclined to be otherwise. 

But I still think it's purty.

The Philadelphia Story

What a brilliant comedy! This witty story about an irresistable socialite and the men who love her has some of the best dialogue I've ever heard in a film. It's sharp-witted, fast-paced, ironic and intelligent. Besides, I'll gaze at Cary Grant or James Stewart any day.

Normally, I'm not into Vogue. Too stuffy. But the photographs of Keira Knightley in this issue are stunning. Even though the thought of wearing couture on safari is absurd.

Another Shallow Fashion Post...

I think I've been posting about dresses so much lately because we're working on fashion sketches right now in design class. This dress, which Eva Mendes wore to the premiere of Ghost Rider, caught my eye because it's able to pull off the hippie look without seeming too earthy for the red carpet. The dress has just enough strucure to be figure-friendly, and I love the neckline. Overall a really fun dress.

Cate Blanchett (2005 Golden Globes)

I know this is from last year, but since I was on a "Golden Globes" wavelength I had to feature it. Cate Blanchett is one of my favorite actresses. She, like Meryl Streep, can play anything, and her fashion sense is timeless, yet sleek and modern. I love this dress. It wouldn't look good on me, but with her coloring and slim figure, it's beautiful.

Sienna Miller (2007 Golden Globes)

Sienna Miller is always quick to try something new and set a trend. This dress is gorgeous...it flatters her very well and pulls off the Grecian look sans the not-always-flattering empire waist. This is my pick for best dress at the Golden Globes.

Film Flash: Marie Antoinette

The new film Marie Antoinette, by Sofia Coppola, has recieved a lot of media attention, both good and bad. Though the acting midght be mediocre and the plot watered down, the costumes, stunning scenery and rock music soundtrack make it a great film to watch: it is almost like a moving painting. This is a film I would love to watch in pieces (all at once is a bit long) any time I feel the aristic side of my films is uninspired. The best scenes are the party scenes: it really humanizes the characters, and takes away some of stuffiness we tend to attribute to royals.

Sirens

There have always been certain woman in pop culture who have that extra "oomph." Women who aren't afraid to be curvy (or use a very good corset,) women that every girl wants to be and every man wants to date, women who effortlessly walk the line between classy and trashy and glamorous.
The screen siren style never truly dies. A siren, unlike a bond girl or a tramp, has brains and mystique to match her curves.


Some of these women are: Veronica Lake, Marilyn Monroe, Faye Dunaway, Evylyn Nesbit, Donna Reed, Greta Garbo, Angelina Jolie, and Jessica Lange. Pictured are Scarlett Johansson, Elizabeth Taylor, Beyonce and Eva Mendes.

Fashion Flash: Rebecca Romijn

Rebecca Romijn wore this dress to the premiere of X-Men: The Last Stand. I'm not normally crazy about gold material on clothing, but something about this one just works. It comes across as light and ethereal rather than gaudy, and catches your eye in a good way. This dress is also such a success because it manages to have Napoleonic-Era influences (empire waist, cap sleeves) without the rest of her figure being lost in a giant dress.

Fashion Flash: Michelle Williams

Okay, so these might not be the best pictures of Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams, but they were the best I could find. I want to talk about her dress (a Vera Wang that she wore to the 2006 Academy Awards.) If I were going to the Oscars, I would want a dress like it. The yellow color is bold yet classy, and the overall cut is definately vintage inspired without trying too hard. Plus, I love the bold red lip. It just pulls everything together so nicely.

Film Flash: Roman Holiday

The Film Roman holiday is just so much fun. I dare you to watch it and not fall in love. It was Audrey Hepburn's first major motion picture (and won her the Academy Award for Best Actress,) not to mention one of the first Hollywood films to be shot on location. The screenplay writer had to go under a fake name because he was actually on the Hollywood blacklist.

The film is about a princess (Hepburn) who, tired of her duties, runs away and is discovered by a journalist (Peck.) She doesn't tell him who she is, but he figures it out, and plays ignorance so that he can do a big story on "princess gone wild." But, of course, they fall in love, and things get complicated.

This movie inspires me with it's spirited comedic acting, beautiful cinematography and spunky storyline. Okay, so Gregory Peck "inspires" me, too.

Fashion Flash: Lovely Parker

I love Sarah Jessica Parker's sense of style. This is an outfit that she wore recently at the launch of some new products for her Lovely perfume line. (Which is quite lovely, by the way.) This outfit works so well because it plays off some of the big trends for fall (pencil skirts, stilletos, etc.) while still looking unique to the individual person.

Fashion Flash: Sloppy Chic

Dressing up is nice and all, but it takes real talent to be sloppy and stylish. No one does this better than Keira Knightley. She's not afraid to layer bulky pieces, and it always looks good on her. I love her rasta hats.

Fashion Flash: Purple Curves

Evangeline Lilly's simple dress is made entirely regal my the rich purple color. The artist in me can't help but notice how stunning the violet gown looks against the red carpet. The dress also really enhances her hips, but in a flattering, "not fat" way.
